Brian Lam leaves Gizmodo, pursuing “next adventure”

brianlam-full

Long-time Gizmodo editor Brian Lam has left the site, according to a self-published farewell post:

After five years at Gizmodo, I’m moving on to play around in the ocean a bit more and figure out what my next adventure is.

Lam’s career has had its share of high and low points, most notably his involvement with fellow editor Jason Chen the iPhone 4 debacle. Lam had taken a somewhat-shady approach toward an agreement to return the iPhone 4 prototype to Apple, if only Apple would agree to state that it was real:

I understand the position you’re in, and I want to help, but it conflicts with my own responsibilities to give the phone back without any confirmation that its real, from apple, officially.

Something like that – from you or apple legal – is a big story, that would make up for giving the phone back right away. If the phone disappears without a story to explain why it went away, and the proof it went to apple, it hurts our business. And our reputation. People will say this is a coordinated leak, etc.

There is little else said in Lam’s farewell post, and even less on Twitter:

Lam had been with Gizmodo since the later part of 2006, joining the site after a time spent writing for Wired Magazine.

Ufone launching HTC Flyer next week in Pakistan

I recently got a chance to review HTC first ever Android tablet which is known as HTC Flyer. It's an amazing tablet and currently one of the best tablets available out there. It was recently launched in India and now it looks like it's hitting our neighboring country Pakistan soon. ProPakistani is claiming that Ufone Pakistan will be launching HTC Flyer officially next week in Pakistan. Ufone recently launched HTC Incredible S in Pakistan and now they are looking forward to launch their first ever Android tablet. Ufone will offer this tablet for around 64-65k. Ufone announced some good Android phones in past, and now they are getting ready to extend their line.
Ufone will offer the Flyer with an internet bundle e.g. free internet for 3 months. I am also in contact with HTC Pakistan and will tell you their final words so stay tuned. Anyone planning to get this from Ufone?

Global Swine Flu threat. Notes from the past: What next?

Most of us watching the news are probably up-to-date on the Swine Flu outbreak. The Media, bloggers and others are generating awareness . . . and a lot of buzz. I was reflecting on what this mean to those of us in the Business of Globalization. Such epidemics certainly a cause for concern. The way I look at it:

  • In the short run the pandamic will certainly impact trade and business as people become hesitant to get on a plane, travel and attend critical meetings. Companies, especially multinationals, will send out travel advisories based on their individual corporate risk assessments. More governments may issue travel advisories. Cross-continental and international travellers may have to undergo additional screening. . . . etc . etc.

  • In the mid-term, say next few weeks: one should be watching with caution, use common sense while travelling and of course have confidence that the authorities around the world are going to do their best to contain the epidemic. Of course, HR departments, corporate security groups and governments are perhaps doing a quick scan of lessons learnt from that the SARS era. Note to self: there is an irony that the SARS scare also came at a time of global slowdown (in the tech sector)
  • Most of us in the business of globalization remember SARS virus scare that had a similar short-term impact on global trade . . . but was soon forgotten. In the long run, things will settle back into a pattern. And of course there will be new lessons learnt.
