Best Buy takes on Apple, Amazon with new cloud music service

Best Buy announced “Music Cloud” on Wednesday, a new service that will compete directly with other cloud-based music services from Apple, Amazon, and Google. Best Buy Music Cloud is powered by Play Anywhere and, after a quick sign-up process, users can download the application to their Mac or PC, as well as to an iPhone, Android device or BlackBerry. Once the respective applications are installed, Music Cloud allows you to stream tunes or cache them for offline playback. The free package allows access to the Best Buy Web player only, so you’ll need to cough up $4 per month for the premium package to access your tunes wherever you go.

Apple removes ThirdIntifada from the App Store after Israeli government request

Raquel_Israeli_Flag

Apple has removed the ThirdIntifada app from the App Store, after the Israeli government asked Apple to get rid of it earlier this week.

ThirdIntifada was used to distribute anti-Israeli editorial and announce scheduled protests to Palestinian users. Intifada is an Arabic word that means “shaking off” but can be more accurately translated to English as “uprising”.

Two previous Israeli-Palestinian conflicts are known as the First Intifada and Second Intifada, and the name ThirdIntifada makes the intent of those behind the app quite clear.

Israel’s information minister Yuli Edelstein and the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human rights group, both complained to Apple. Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr told the Associated Press that the app “violates the developer guidelines by being offensive to large groups of people.”

Apple iCloud manager departs for healthcare service

john herboldTime to queue up “Get Off My Cloud” by the Rolling Stones. Apple iCloud senior manager John Herbold has departed Apple to join online healthcare service HealthTeacher as vice president of product.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to define, ship and market a variety of products for one of the world’s most admired product companies,” Herbold wrote on LinkedIn. “That opportunity was a great privilege. Now I get to take that experience and apply it to the enormous challenge of materially improving your health.”

Apple’s much-hyped iCloud storage service will launch this fall, but it now has one less team member to help work out the kinks before its public launch. iCloud sets out to unify a user’s media content across iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad and Mac computers.

Before working on the creation and development of iCloud, Herbold worked on various products at Apple, including Photo Stream and MobileMe. Herbold was previously a technology investment banking analyst at A.G. Edwards & Sons.

Nashville-based HealthTeacher has been around since 1999 and aims to be a powerful online tool for enabling educators and teaching strong habits to children. The service is used in all 50 states and in 14 foreign countries.

Apple closes Final Cut Pro X reviews in Mac App Store

filming

Apple seems to have closed down the ability to create new reviews of Final Cut Pro X on the Mac App Store and removed existing submissions.

While it could be a bug or part of maintenance, it appears that the company is trying to control damage after a scathing response to the new version of the popular film editing app, released this week. Professionals in the field are calling it iMovie Pro due to the omission of several important features.

In the event that Apple removed reviews from the store page intentionally to control negative criticism, the company has made a serious public relations blunder — not something they often do. This move is only casting more light on the app’s failings.

Update: Reviews are back,  and some reports say that this was an App Store-wide bug, though for ourselves and other users the issue affected only Final Cut Pro X. We’ll treat this one as a bug, though with some skepticism.9to5Mac

Apple COO Tim Cook visits China Mobile, sparks speculation on iPhone partnership

Apple COO Tim Cook reportedly visited China Mobile yesterday, causing speculation that the Cupertino company is in negotiations with China’s largest telecommunications operator about the release of the next generation iPhone or a prospective TD-LTE iPhone on the network.

China Mobile has long been rumored to be in talks with Apple about an iPhone partnership; however, currently only rival China Unicom sells the device. According to the TechNode report, neither Apple nor China Mobile disclosed the reason behind Tim Cook’s visit, but China Mobile has always been transparent in their interest in the iPhone.

Wang Jianzhou, China Mobile’s head, has declared that the company “will continue to seek for the iPhone cooperation opportunity.”

Despite not being available officially, TechNode claims that there are more than 5 million iPhone users using China Mobile’s wireless network, which is about the same number as the iPhone users using China Unicom.

China Mobile is the world’s largest mobile phone operator with over 600 million subscribers. Now that’s something Apple can’t ignore.Image Credit
